How three months of personalized strength training helped one Sherpa client increase his driver ball speed by more than 14 mph.
Golf performance is about more than perfecting your swing. Strength, mobility, stability, and rotational power all play an important role in generating clubhead speed, improving consistency, and keeping your body performing well throughout the season.
At Sherpa in Westport, CT, we believe that what you accomplish in the gym should translate directly into what you love doing Beyond the Gym.
For Sherpa client Ryan, that meant one thing: hitting the golf ball farther.
When Ryan began working with Sherpa Coach Maggie in July, he had a specific performance goal. He wanted to improve his strength and mobility to increase his driver ball speed from approximately 150 to 155 mph to 170 mph.
Rather than simply spending more time on the driving range, Ryan focused on building the physical foundation needed to generate more power.
Working with Maggie, he followed a personalized strength training program designed to improve upper-body strength, lower-body stability, mobility, and rotational control.
The results speak for themselves.
By October 12, just three months after starting, Ryan recorded a driver ball speed of 169.3 mph, an improvement of more than 14 mph from the upper end of his starting range and just shy of his original goal.
Ryan’s improvement wasn’t limited to his driver. His progress in the gym demonstrated how consistent, structured training can develop the strength and stability that support athletic performance.
Ryan progressed from bench pressing 85 pounds for 8 repetitions to 135 pounds for 12 repetitions.
That represents a substantial improvement in both strength and muscular endurance. While bench press strength alone doesn’t determine golf swing speed, developing a stronger upper body contributes to the overall physical capacity needed for powerful, controlled movement.
Golf is a rotational sport, but much of that rotation depends on the strength and stability of the lower body.
Through consistent split squat training, Ryan made significant improvements in lower-body strength and hip and pelvic control.
These qualities help golfers maintain stability, transfer force through the body, and produce more efficient rotational movement during the swing.
For Ryan, the combination of upper-body strength, lower-body development, and improved mobility supported measurable progress toward his golf performance goal.
Many recreational golfers invest time in lessons, equipment, and practice but overlook the physical capabilities that support their swing.
A personalized strength and mobility program can help golfers:
The goal isn’t simply to lift heavier weights. It’s to develop the physical qualities that allow you to perform better in the activities you enjoy.
Ryan’s progress reflects Sherpa’s approach to personal training in Westport, CT.
We begin by understanding your goals, assessing your current capabilities, and developing a structured program built around what you want to accomplish.
Whether that means increasing golf ball speed, preparing for ski season, improving cycling performance, or maintaining strength and mobility as you age, the process is the same.
Assess. Plan. Train. Measure. Progress.
Ryan didn’t come to Sherpa simply to get stronger in the gym. He came to improve his golf game. Three months later, his strength improvements were accompanied by measurable gains in driver ball speed.
That’s what Move Your Boundaries means at Sherpa. Progress you can measure, and capability you can use Beyond the Gym.
You don’t need to be a competitive golfer to benefit from personalized strength and mobility training.
